We have begun our Daily 5 stations everyday from 11-11:25. In the morning our class takes their picture to choose which station they will be working at for this specific time period that day. They have the choice between Read to Self, Read to Someone, Work on Writing, Word Work, and Listen to Reading. Miss Fausett chooses who will be Listening to Reading for the day (either a book on tape or listening to a book on the computer). We rotate who is at Listen to Reading every day so that everyone gets a chance to be there. Read to Self Students choosing Read to Self will be independently reading books from our classroom library. For now they get to choose which book they will read. Soon we will begin our "Just Right Books" where each students receives their own book box with books that are just at their level. For now, they are getting to know books in our library and looking for Word Wall Words, discussing characters, setting, where the cover page is, where the title is, etc. They may choose to read on a chair, grab a pillow, and use whisper phones. Read to Someone Sometimes students prefer to read with a partner. During this time students may or may not choose to read the same book. However, it is important for students to sit EEKK (Elbow to Elbow, Knee to Knee) and take turns reading every other page. "Elbow to Elbow, Knee to Knee I'll read to you and you'll read to me." Work on Writing Students who are at Work on Writing will have the choice to "Write the Room", draw and label their picture, write a sentence, or practice their handwriting. The "Write the Room" activity is focused on a particular letter. Their job is to find words that begin or have that specific letter to write down on their clipboard. Word Work Students are either working on Word Wall Words, uppercase/lowercase matching, putting sentences in their correct order, etc. There are numerous Word Wall Word activities where students can play with a partner or independently. Listen to Reading
Students use cd players or listen to a book online on computers to hear fluent reading. After they are finished they practice looking for words they know how to read, draw a picture of their favorite part of their story and write the title.
